I don't believe determining a group's value can be done statically.  All the
opinions and ideas presented in this message and its replies would break down in
the game because of strategic and tactical implications.   It would seem to me
that importance of groups, individual stones, territory, and empty points all
hinge on strategy and tactics.  Finding a way to determine strategic importance
as well as point count and life/death status is the key to playing well I
believe.
