I'm not the author who Vincent replies here to, but I think that when a
good player 'matches a pattern', what he can often remember is a certain
continuation or a small game tree associated with the local situation.
Therefore, by matching many patterns at the same time (brain probably does
that) the player is actually performing 'parallel search', because he is
considering (subconsciously) many game trees at the same time.

Anyway, this isn't probably very much of practical importance, and it's
just a guess.
