Preannouncement: CGF Computer Go Tournament

To all,

On July 23 and 24, CGF will hold a Computer Go Tournament in Tsukuba, Japan.
CGF (Computer Go Forum) is an interest group for computer Go. It was
founded in 1995 and has about 60 members, including many researchers,
programmers, and hobbyists with an interest in the field.

The idea for this tournament originated because of the continuing
uncertainty surrounding the FOST Cup, which has been the only computer Go
tournament held in Japan in the last 4 years.
So far, there has been no announcement of a 1999 tournament by FOST. However,
there are rumors that even if a tournament is held this year, it would be
an exclusive, invitation-only event. To make sure that every Go programmer
can participate in a Japan-based tournament this year, CGF has decided to
hold its own open tournament, independent of FOST. We hope that our CGF
tournament will provide an occasion for the free exchange of knowledge
between participants, in order to achieve a higher level for the whole
field of computer Go.

As yet, CGF has no funding and therefore cannot promise large amounts of
prize money. However, we hope you understand our purpose in creating this
event and join in our tournament.

As a protocol for dealing with the plagiarism issue, we have adopted
basically the protocol proposed by Atsushi YOSHIKAWA and 13 programmers
which was published in this computer-go mailing list on April 16. We thank
them for their work.

In the following we give some preliminary information about the
tournament. More detailed tournament regulations and registration will be
announced soon.
