Re: Advice on evaluation
I know two books that discussed evaluations in detail. One is Cho's
'Positional Judgement' and the other one is Nie's 'Nie Weiping On Go'. Many
of you may thought that Chinese players are not strong enough so that
overlooked Nie's book. I'll point out couple things to help put Nie's
strength in perspective. One time Kobayashi eliminated consecutively 5 top
Chinese players in a team tournament. But he was eliminated by Nie. In
another team tournament Yoda eliminated consecutively 6 top Chinese players,
but himself was eliminated by Nie. Actually Nie was the last one standing in
those two tournaments. Although these happened in late 70's and early 80's,
it the same time Nie wrote that book.
Nie evaluates position slightly different from Cho. He considered the
question Dave Fotland asked. His method is to take the average value, that is
two values added together and divided by 2.
