Yes, speaking from a personal point of view, a student, Steve Willmott,
doing a masters thesis here in Edinburgh University wrote a program
which formulated plans for achieving goals in Go. Initial results were
very encouraging, and the planning algorithm was quite ingenious. It
really was a very good thesis. I was one of his supervisors, and
presented a paper on the subject at the computers and games conference
in Japan last year. I would be delighted to discuss the work with
anyone interested. A copy of the paper is available from my web page at
http://www.dai.ed.ac.uk/staff/personal_pages/julianr/cg98_final.ps.gz
An expanded version of the paper will appear in the Journal of
Theoretical Computer Science. I can send you a copy if you are
interested.
