computer-go: GNU Go 2.6

The following message is a courtesy copy of an article
that has been posted to rec.games.go as well.

GNU Go 2.6 has been released.

GNU Go is a free program that plays Go. GNU Go has played
over 9600 games on NNGS. It is currently plays there at the
16 kyu* level. GNU Go is a project of the Free Software
Foundation (http://www.gnu.org).

Of course GNU Go urns well on GNU/Linux machines. If you
are running X-Windows, a beautiful way of running GNU Go
is with CGoban. In environments where X-Windows is not
available, such as Microsoft Windows, a good alternative
is Jago, a free Java client.

You can also run GNU Go on any platform without a client
using its ASCII interface. Alternatively, it has an Emacs
mode which allows you to place the stones on an ASCII
board using the cursor movement keys.

For further information about GNU Go see:

   GNU Go main page:

   Online documentation:

   Development versions:

To contact the GNU Go developers email gnugo@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

GNU Go 2.6 is stronger than 2.4. Our tests show the difference
in strength is slightly less than 2 stones.

Portability has been improved. GNU Go has been revised to
build cleanly on many platforms. In particular, compilation
under Windows is now well supported, with various compilers:
DJGPP, Cygwin (with or without GLIB), MINGW32 (another
compiler which comes with Cygwin using Microsoft DLL's), or
Visual C++ using Project files or NMake.
