Personally, I wish there were a ton of small, low overhead local
events and only occasional big, but important ones. The low overhead
events shouldn't be expected to provide anything more than a friendly
atmosphere and fair playing conditions.

A pet peeve of mine is author presence. I have, as a chess program
author, played in many organized computer chess events. When I do
spend money (and my time) to go to these events, I expect to interact
with a lot of the other programmers, my peers. It's a big
disappointment to sit across from Joe Shmoe, a local guy, who isn't
even a programmer and often doesn't even know how to work the program.

I understand that not all can afford to come or have the time in their
busy schedules. There are also a bunch who could, but just don't want
to make the effort. If program author presense was a requirement, I
believe in the long run it would give these events a whole lot more
status and class. Someone could argue that it would give them less
status if good programs were not always represented because of this,
but I will counter this by saying that I could have my own tournament
at home, buying all the strongest programs and yet I seriously doubt
anyone would take it seriously. If the authors take it seriously,
then so will others. If they don't, then gradually no one else will.

Just my 13 cents worth!
