I wouldn't be too sure. This kind of thing has worked for GnuGo. We all have
had to accept some compromises, but the benefits have been great: A
well-functioning framework to try your experiments, without spending a year
on the basics first.
BTW, isn't the OpenGo project trying to build a C++ toolkit? Anyone heard if
they have made progress, or withered away?
