computer-go: liberty and safety

I remember long time ago, there was a discussion about how to extend a group 
of stones in terms of first degree liberty, second degree liberty, ... 
stuff. But I cannot find it on the Web.

BTW,

* Is this list archived and searchable? Is the old (not hosted by uoregon) 
computer go discussion list archive still accessible?

* Martin Mueller's online thesis are in pdf.gz or ps.gz formats, but neither 
WinZip nor Unix gzip recognizes them.
