Re: computer-go: Number of Go players in the world

I just looked at the logs for December, and it's much more than I thought.

In December, Igowin.exe was downloaded 13,711 times. Since igowin is
over 4 years old, it has probably been downloaded over 300,000 times.

Through Igowin, maybe I've taught go to more people than anyone else :)

Of 11,800 sessions with locations, 7800 were US, 1500 Japan, 700 France,
400 Canada, 350 UK, and the next 5 are Australia and four European countries.

The top referrers are Mindy Mcadams intro to go, kiseido, the AGA, the british go association,
download.com, and google with the search phrase "igowin".

The english language numbers are way too low, if you just count people

there have been at least 100,000 igowin downloads, and most of those
people played a least a few games against it.
Hi David,
Do you have a breakdown of download against region however? Maybe many of the downloads are from Japan/Korea? There is also the distortion of people downloading more than once (e.g. a copy for their work machine, or after buying a new machine, etc.).

I'm looking forward to 5-10years from now when the hikaru-no-go fans are: a) swelling the professional ranks; b) at university and interested in computer go research. (assuming someone on this list doesn't solve go before then ;-).
