I suppose, for live and death or safety problems you usually use a local search. But how do you specify the search area for a local search?
By doing qualitative preanalysis that detects usefully defined local environments. To give a trivial example: Determine all pass-alive strings of a player (*) and then divide the board into local subboards. For LD it seems to be useful to have several layers of local environments. Details are secret, except that it often makes sense to consider bicoloured strings. -- robert jasiek (*) He always passes.
