That seems possible. However, I think it has more to do with the structure of the game which (at least for 19x19) gives it a larger dynamic range.

Not to mention that with more players the opening search space will have
been searched more rigorously, assuming that the intitial sequences which
led to poor performance would be discarded, and that people playing the
game learn from those who have played the game before.
