Belated disclaimers: IANAL, and yes I was taking the Swiss & EU situation
as a basis - your mileage may vary.  Thanks for the corrections and
additions.  Even where software patents are allowed, those that don't
affect a program's interface are hard to enforce: to determine whether
somebody else's binary infringes on your patent, you must disassemble
and reverse-engineer it...

IMO, there are two main ways to make money from a software idea: either
you keep it a trade secret and develop it into a commercial product
(alone or with partners), or you publicize it widely, make yourself
a name as the world expert in this new technique, then capitalize on
that reputation.  In short: the closed and open source models.
