I think it was Eric Raymond (am not very sure) that said that Unix is an OS for
the developers, while Windows is for the end-user. In that view, both approaches
are valid, with their own pros and cons.
But in fact, hard-core Windows developers don't (always) feel they have to swim
against the current, and also hard-core Unix non-developers find their way with
emacs, LaTeX and such.
So I think problems arise when one tries to use the wrong paradigm - think Unix
on Windows or the other way around.
returning to the topic, the problem is that one can't use Unix tools on Windows,
so one either has to port those tools, or to take another approach.
