My Dell Latitude has a serial port, and it was purchased late last
year.  Of course they don't sell systems with AMD processors.

I have purchased USB-to-Serial adapters for hooking up devices such
as older palm pilots, etc. that only have serial interfaces with new
machines that only have USB interfaces.  That might be an option for
you to investigate.  The adapters are fairly inexpensive.
