John's definition is CORRECT. What is INCORRECT is your understanding of the
term "ladder". If you look at a large number of ladder problems you will see
that ladders can bend, and spiral and sometimes capture other stones along
the way. The only common feature is that at every stage the group to be
captured gets at most 2 liberties and the capturing moves reduce it to 1
liberty.
The staircase shape is a common feature, but not a defining one.
