It is impossible to say what you need to make two _arbitrary_ GTP
programs play against each other, because the protocol _intentionally_
doesn't restrict/specify the way of communication.

However, here is what you need to play "typical" GTP programs
against each other:

* Two Go programs supporting GTP.
* One computer with an OS under which both programs can run.
* One controller program. This can be
  - a script from `twogtp' family
  - a GUI program, for instance
    - GoGui (portable?), http://sourceforge.net/projects/gogui/
    - Goban (Mac OS X), http://www.sente.ch/software/goban/
    - Quarry (UNIX-like systems), http://home.gna.org/quarry/
    - many more

Again, this is not something you _absolutely_ have to have.
