Re: Sharing Secrets (was: [computer-go] Computer Go hardware)

From: "David G Doshay" <ddoshay@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>

But that you would in one post claim that you are writing code for the computing systems of 10 or more years from now and in this post claim that techniques using multiple cpus is not of interest is truly odd.
I don't think that people will use 10-CPU machines in 10 years from now.
Really, many people still use Windows 95 on a 300 MHz PC.
My girlfriend uses a PC with 96 MB and her flatmates' PC have half that (she is Czech).

But I was looking for fundamentals, really.
As you see, some people here get all nervous when you say that there is such a thing as optimum Hamming sistance and bad random. Because this touches at the base of things.

If someone would have spent 1 year auto-learning patterns and he would have used a lousy random generator, all that work would have been in vain and all derived databases would have needed to be re-done.

now." See www.orionmulti.com. The results I posted on SlugGo's performance were with the use of 10 cpus. With the cost of a normal pc down near $500, "the average Go programmer" can also put that together pretty easily all by their self.
Programmer, yes, customer.. How many customers will have a 10-CPU box in say 4, 5, or 6 years? But of course, your work is very relevant and interesting.
Of course one day people will have a few multi-core CPU's in their boxes.

But a general design is not a "secret". "maximum Hamming is worse than slightly less than maximum Hamming" is a fundamental truth that lies at the basis of every Go program and nobody knew it (in fact people get annoyed at me mentioning it)

In as far as your constraint "I will never tell because ..." well, some people just have a different attitude. I for one will stick with "Hey, I tried this and it works!"
Well, I got no "secrets" and hey, I just told the group one of my "secrets"..
And I expect to eat from my work one day..
So I have not such a bad attitude after all..
