Re: [computer-go] Perfect sub-tree move path (was Brute Force...)...

Hi Mark,

A chess master I knew compared chess to tic-tac-toe and said that
anyone can learn to play a perfect game of tic-tac-toe, it just takes
some people longer. He believes that any reasonably intelligent
person can reach any level of playing ability in chess, if they are
willing to put in time and a great deal of effort. He thinks a
persons life-span may be one of the only limiting factors, since it
will take a lot more time for some than others.

I once heard a study was done that made a very strong correlation
between playing strength at chess and the amount of time spent
"consumed" by the game. Bobby Fischer was considered one of the very
best ever, and it is well known that he spent more time than most
other grandmasters studying and playing the game. The study seemed to
indicate that chess playing strength didn't involve much natural
ability, just hard work.

But this is one of those things I know very little about. I agree
with you however, that hard work is the biggest factor.

This seems like a strange idea to me. 'Natural talent' to me just means
someone is able to learn a particular skill faster than others usually can.
Not all the natural talent in the world will make you a better player if you
don't use it to learn more.
