The same goes for human players -- it takes a good
number of games against diverse opponents before
you can successfully evaluate your rank. i think
that it's probably important for computers playing
go to semi-regularly play against ranked humans,
however. (the 50% rule is decent here -- if you
win/lose half of your games against players ranked
X, you're probably around rank X).

if they don't, the exercise is reduced to one of
training computers to be good at playing each other,
which is (for the moment) far, far less interesting
than how they do against people.

the compromise that i like is for computer go
programmers to make a habit of offering up games in
online venues like kgs. everyone is already playing
via a computer, so the interface isn't an issue, and
the computer players get lots of opportunities to
settle their ranks against human opponents.
