Re: [computer-go] How come Gnu managed to lose to indigo?

> Any plausibel explanation why GnuGo lost to indigo in 2004 Computer Olympiad?

I don't know how good Indigo is compared to Gnugo, but presumably you
think this should not have occured.

But statistically, any player can win against any player in a game or
even in a series of games. The bigger the difference in skill, the
less likely such an event will occur but it can always happen. I
don't think it follows from 1 game that GnuGo is confused by Indigo's
style.

My own program will beat GNU Go 15% of the time. Those occasionally
wins are not flukes, they represent the difference in skill. If I
played my program in a tournament it would likely meet GNU Go and
lose. If it happen to win, there would probably be a big buzz about
"this strong new program" and why this upstart was able to beat it.

Any plausibel explanation why GnuGo lost to indigo in 2004 Computer Olympiad? I played quickly (well I played quickly, not the indigo) and I was able to pull about 120 pt win against it. While with Gnu Go I occasionally lose to it but usesually win by 20-30 points?

Gnu Go is much stronger than indigo tactically. And even in "WholeBordVision" it does better job. Indigo allows it groups to be enclosed far too easily. So is ther some plausible explanation. Like Gnu Go is too passive and does not get advantage it deserves because it does not challenge its' lesser abled opponet into a fight?.

Just Curios. Are there other similar odd pairs where styles do match. Like Go++ coud be one such oppponent. It player veryt terrotiry oriented game that can hard to match by a computer opponent.
