RE: [computer-go] Computer Go tournament at EGF

This is exactly correct for me. Many Faces of Go is tuned to play in about
an hour at the
slowest level. When computers get faster, I add more search, or replace
approximations with
more exact (and slower) calculations, to use the extra time. The original
Many Faces, in 1984,
ran on an 8 MHz machine, more than 1000 times slower than what we have
today, and played
a game in about an hour.

When I make a change, I need to run enough tests to see if it improves the
program, and if it
is too slow, I can't do testing fast enough. Part of my testing is playing
games overnight on
IGS, and the players there won't play at slow time limits.
