Re: [computer-go] Long time games on KGS?

So, in an attempt to guage interest in slower time limit games, I'd
like to propose to play some long time limit 9x9 games on KGS. I'm
specifically interested in playing my program against SlugGo, but if
more people are interested maybe we could coordinate an actual
tournament.
As a tentative proposal, I'll challenge SlugGo to the following:
2 games, 9x9, each side takes black one game, 6.5 komi, 1 hour main
time + 1 period of 1 minute byo yomi.
To be played some evening (eastern time) during this week, in the
computer go room on KGS.
David, if you're interested (or anyone else, for that matter), let me
know. Any of those terms are negotiable if you'd prefer something
different.
Yes, I am interested. But SlugGo is presently unstable and we
are beating the bugs back. We have been trying a number of
things and just decided yesterday to back a few features out.
SlugGo has never played on an internet server, nor have I, but
does play against Many Faces through our own tourney-referee,
which is based upon the NNGS, so KGS should not be too much
extra work ... I hope. Anything I should be told about the protocol?
We should have a (more) bug free version in a week or 3, and
I will contact you then.
SlugGo has no time controls at all and will not in the time frame
of a few weeks, so if we use up that hour SlugGo will not know
it and will not play any differently in Byo-yomi ... and you will
win on time. But SlugGo does sometimes finish a 19x19 game
against Many Faces in an hour, so such a small board should
be fine.
SlugGo has never played at 9x9, so I have no idea at all how
strong it might be on that board. We have done 7x7 just for
quick verification of beating back assertion failures, and other
than that we have always played 19x19. We have at least one
parameter that is set quite wrong for a 9x9 board and because
we have never adjusted any of SlugGo's 20 or so free
parameters I will need to take a stab at doing that too. The
more I think about it the more parameters I worry about. I
feel sure that SlugGo will do funny things on 9x9, but it is
probably worth seeing.
Also, SlugGo has never played black! So this should be fun,
or at least a good time to verify something very basic. ;^)
But your terms are fine none the less if that is what you want.
If I were to pick things that made it easier for me I would
suggest 13x13 or 15x15 just so I don't have to think so
hard about what changes to make to those free parameters.
And of course there is that time limit business ... ;^)
Just let us get back to you when we think we have a stable
version.
Cheers,
David
