Not necessarily so. AI research tries to use computers
to develop an understanding of the mechanisms which
make humans so much better at some problems.

I would call search (with tree pruning etc.) the "classical"
approach, which is so successful in chess. I would also
see pattern-directed systems and rule-based systems in this
class. But for me it remains unclear if this approach will
eventually succeed in Go, even with ever faster hardware.

On the other hand I have to admit that machine learning
methods have not (yet?) produced results comparable to
the specialized "classical" expert systems which the
most Go programs today are in fact.
