Re: [computer-go] KGS Tournaments: Format
I can answer about the software used in the tournaments, but Nick will
be making the decisions on the actual tournaments.
I do hope to add both McMahon and round robin tournaments. Round robin
of course is easy, and since Swiss is there already McMahon should be
fairly simple also. They both have issues though; round robin is
difficult when players may have network issues or program crashes and
miss a round or more (as happened in the sample tournament). How do you
recover when a player disappears from one round, or from the last few
rounds, of a round-robin tournament? You always want to keep a coherent
end score, but at the same time minimize the number of times that a
player has to sit out a round. The only issue with McMahon is that it
needs ranks to work (see below).
Handicap is totally possible, most of the KGS Plus tournaments are
handicap.
There is one big problem with handicap and McMahon tournaments: Every
player needs a rank. GnuGo and Go++ both have KGS ranks, and a few
others...but requiring solid ranks will limit the number of players who
can possibly play in the tournament quite a bit. Maybe good to have some
handicap/McMahon tournaments, but having some non-handicap is nice too,
to allow more players.
