Yes, that's a practical issue that is important. [*]

Why not let first all GnuGo (or whatever) derivatives play agains
themselves, and only the winner will enter the formal competition?

Or let the casual competition serve as a continuous qualifying tournament -
before each casual tournament, select only the top program representing a
certain family?

[*] The idea would be not to enter exact copies, but variants.
