[computer-go] Chinese/Japanese score difference

There is the occasional mention of differences in scoring between
Chinese and Japanese on this list. It interesting how large the
difference between the two can be (in theory).

Unless I'm mistaken (it's happened before)...

In Chinese scoring: The most player A can win by is N, where N is the
number of intersections.

In Japanese scoring: At first, I thought the most player A can win by
was approximately N^2 / 2 -- by player A letting the opponent almost
fill the board and then capturing everything with a single stone and
then repeating that process until player A's stones almost fill the
whole board. But then I realized that player A could allow himself to
be captured at the end of that process and then do it all again.
Could this go on forever? Each iteration gains approx N^2/2 points
for player A and approx N points for player B. So the amount that
player A is winning by grows linearly without limit (unless you have a
super ko rule, and that would not come into play for quite a few
iterations). Is play officially supposed to stop when one player has
used all 180 (or 181) stones?
