I agree. The cases where counting diagonals gives the wrong result are
found by tactical search (the group cannot be captured).

P.S. What you call clusters (assuming I didn't misunderstand) are
normally called chains or strings. I use "chain" as I have lots of
classes with "chain" in their name. But if I was starting fresh I'd use
"string" as that is what GnuGo calls them.
