  You mean "playing at the center of symmetry"...

  There is a high-level dan on IGS who often plays at the center point.
When when he's black and the game has been: black takes a corner, white
takes a corner, black takes a corner, white takes a corner.

  Black now can now take the initiative and attack, but instead plays at
the center.

  An interesting observation about this strategy is that many Joseki don't
work if the opposing player has a stone at the center point (i.e. the
ladders fail, etc.). I guess the high level dan makes this work for him
(sorry I don't remember his name.)

  Now he doesn't do that in the opening move, however.

  With a game theory view, playing at the center point for your opening
move is only ludicrous if you feel its worth less then the komi value.
Otherwise, its the same has having white. Then again, what is the value of
"sente"?
