I don't think that it would make much difference to the playing strength. Once
a program has a few thousand popular move generation patterns, it can
usually find a reasonable move, so the issue becomes one of accurate
life and death evaluation, and fighting strength.

There are some experiments going on now to see if the moves suggested by go programs
include good ones often enough to play at amateur Dan level. Early results indicate
that the move generators are generating dan-level moves. The programs often
don't chose them due to poor life and death evaluation or poor territory evaluation.
