Agenda has released a new PDA that runs on an embedded linux OS.  It runs 
X and you can cross-compile apps with GCC to run on the PDA.  If there are
existing *nix desktop apps that meet your needs, you may just be able to
recompile them for this particular handheld.

I don't have one (yet), but have been reading some of the developer 
threads and it seems like a pretty neat device for doing this sort of 
thing (writing apps without having to learn a new handheld OS/GUI).
