There is a difference between some ko rule and a complete
(set of) ko rule(s) :)

It is important for beginners, too. I have seen beginners
stopping to play because the rules were too complex or
illogical.
It is important for normal players, too. Usually when I
see some using Japanese rules, a dead ko at the game end,
and a discussion about it, then they wish they would really
know the rules.
It is important for tournament organizers and referees, too,
who have to worry about judging fairly.
OC, you might be right that it is a little more important for
a theorist than for someone else:)

See rec.games.go archives. However, what is the point of your
question? Normally a player is only interested in the one and
only one superko rule he uses.

More or less you might be right here. Thus why should there exist
anything more complex like a pass-for-ko-rule?
