Bill Shubert also wanted to try this. But Bill is pretty busy. 
Unless Bill objects I'd say go for it.

I think we have a handle now on what the basic commands
need to be in order to implement a client, basically the
ones used in twogtp and gnugoclient, which more or less
coincided with the ones that Don implemented for his
protocol.

Maybe we should be setting up a mailing list for standardizing
the gtp.

In addition to that there is the texinfo doc in GNU Go 2.7.246.
Some of Gunnar's description (http://www.gnu.org/software/gnugo/gtp.txt, 
this is the doc you are referring to) will be added to the texinfo
doc for 2.7.247. This is in the patch:
