It first showed up in 1999 and took second place in the CGF cup, but it had
been in development for 5 years before that.  It does some things better
than the other programs but not all things :)
Yes, it is sold commercially in Japan. If I remember correctly, the author
Ryuichi Kawa is a commercial game programmer and has already released a
number of other games, before concentrating on Go in recent years.
