You don't have to use a null modem cable - just have the two programs
communicate over a named pipe, or through a program that reads from
two ttys and sends the output of one to the input of the other, or use
a program like Jago or cgoban. If you're using GTP, the twogtp program
does something similar.

My recollection is that there's a GTP program that will hook up a
program that speaks GTP to IGS/NNGS...
