Re: [computer-go] Purpose of Neural-Nets?

Floating point numbers are involved in some Go programs. For example, some programs calculate the influence of a stone by assigning float point values to its neighouring positions. Another example, some programs calculate the influence of a stone using 1/r, where r is the distance between the position and the stone. One time I watched a pro player commenting on a game. He commented on a specific group saying this group is about 50% alive. Later he said this group is now about 80% alive and so on. If a program can calculate accurately the liveliness of a group, a 85% alive is definitely better than a 80% alive, which would help the search for the best move.
