I have been thinking about the segmentation problem.  Maybe segmenting the
go board into individual groups is not so important as being able to
segment the contested areas and the non contested areas.  I believe
eliminating the non-contested areas to be useful for implementing a
search, as well as evaluating the result of a game.

If a group is not explicitly alive then the positions that that group
occupy are obviously contested.  If a group is alive then the positions
that that group occupies are not contested as well as any surounded
territory.
