Marco,

Any advice about rules, the setup? What is needed to make a tournament big? No entrance fee and prize money?
Another issue, which I don't want to discuss in public, is piracy. There is a leading program which uses code stolen from another. If you are familiar with the computer Go scene, you know who I mean.

One approach, favoured in East Asia, is to turn a blind eye to this. Another, favoured so far in Europe, is to seek to deter the pirated program from entering. A way of doing this is to require all entrants to make their source code available to a trusted person appointed by the organiser. The honest programmers mostly understand why you have this requirement, and that you don't actually intend looking at the code. There is an element of bluff in this, as the pirated program is now full of anti-trace techniques; but if you can convince them that there is a chance that you will be able to expose their piracy, then they won't enter.
