AFAIK, backward compatibility has been respected for more than a year. 
The Goban / GNU Go pair has been working without problems since October 
2001. In December 2002 I made a GTP related change in Goban, when GNU 
Go started using GTP v2: I had to stop sending "fixed_handicap 0" for 
even games, something I should have done from the beginning. That's the 
only protocol required change in 2.5 years.
