Modified in this case means simplified.  GMP was designed to relilably 
start games without
the people being able to communicate, since it was for direct modem 
connection where people are in different locations.
So it has retries, and recovery when both players start at the same time, 
and chat, and negotiation of game
parameters.  GTP doesn't need any of that, and neither did the Gifu challenge.
