Why 80?  Virtually unlimited line, I'd say (though 80 is quite
many already, yes).

There is no need, but once you have GTP, regression testing
becomes really easy.  I'd suggest for all newcomers who haven't
implemented regression testing functionality yet to use GTP +
regression scripts from GNU Go distribution.  They are generic
enough to be usable in other engines and in any case you can
tweak them.

Agreed completely.

I think that simplicity of GTP outweights available XML
libraries even if you don't take readability into account.
