We are looking for a _definition_, aren't we? Well, the
definition part of http://senseis.xmp.net/?Ladders reads:

"A ladder (Japanese term: ???? shicho, Chinese ? zheng ) is
a technique for capturing stones. At each step the attacker
reduces the defender's liberties from two to one."

This sounds not much different from John's definition.
The remaining part of the website deals with examples
and therefore does not contribute much to a definition.

Harry, can you please formalize your remark "because the
shape looks like a ladder"? I would not call your concept
precise before this had been done.
