 yes, I agree that both definitions are similar. 
 My point is that both John's definition and the one
on sensei are not precise. They are just casual
definitions. 

I certainly would like to see more formal definitions
in Go. But too often, casual definitions such as these
are common in the Go community. 

Even the term "ladder" is not as precise.  As someone
mentioned here, "stairs" is a much better description
for it.
