Thanks for  the feedback and example.   I think we  all now understand
where your confusion is, you just showed us another ladder :-)

Seriously,  John's definition is  far more  useful, but  the "classic"
configuration that you  view as the only thing that can be a ladder
isn't very interesting, just as you say. 

You gave this  advice: "before you guys accept  a definition, question
it, and  then question it  harder."  Is this  how you arrived  at your
definition  of  a ladder?   You  appealed to  us  to  rely on  ancient
tradition for definitions which isn't a bad thing at all, but it's not
questioning anything, it's accepting  something.  Even so, I don't see
how  you can  question a  defintion anyway.   A definition  is  just a
shortcut or handle to describe something.

Anyway, that was a fun (and useless) discussion!
