:-) Yes, this is a fun discussion. But I guess it
shows how many different views we still have in Go /
computer Go community. 

Still, from my perspective as a Go player, "ladder"
must have the shape of a stairway. Even though it can
mutate into other shapes due to interference of stones
on its path. After all, Go players saw the shape of a
ladder first, and then created a term afterwards.

why a definition that includs the ladder shape and
many other Go formations together would be easier for
programming. 

So I wouldn't call the following shape a ladder even
if someone writes that as a shape of a ladder in a
book.

Now I understand some of your (and some others) points
of view. For that knowledge, I thank you!
