Rosin and Belew have a '95 conference paper entitled
"Methods for Competitive Co-evolution: Finding
Opponents Worth Beating", in which they apply
"cellular automata rules" to 7x7 Go and evaluate the
co-evolved resultant individuals against Wally. There
results apparently weren't very good. At one point
they say:
"After about 250 generations, some of the best
strategies were able to consistently defeat Wally.
These strategies were still not very good, though.
In particular, they displayed a lack of ability to
look at the board globally, sometimes making a
move which is locally relevant, but incorrect glob
ally because of some more pressing distant play."
Which is, interestingly, what you might expect from a
CA-based player.
