You are right, of course. (Not that I have ever tried to participate in
a computer Go tournament.) Meeting another human - a go programmer! -
will make any encounter more enjoyable. But on the other hand, many
amateur programmers simply cannot afford to travel to various ends of
the world to compete; the best they can do is to send their program on a
disc, and hope for the best. 

This is, of course, orthogonal to the discussion of the protocol used
between two connected computers.
