Thanks for the info on Python, Ruby, and Perl. Besides the speed concern I really should use one of these languages instead of C/C++. Many people are reluctant to switch to other languages. I had the same concerns. Looking back we had AGOL, Pascal, prolog, LISP, Cobot, etc. Many of them just simply disappeared. C/C++ is a proven language. This could be one of the reasons.
I understood you well. Concerning Python, I would advocate two things:
- it is reallly fast to learn. I need, only one hour to learn what is about,
just by reading: http://docs.python.org/tut/tut.html and in only one week,
I felt my self already not an unexperienced guy. If you have just a little time,
You can have a look, you will be rewarded. (I must confess, that my example
was usefull, but not as simple as usual Python is)
- The second point, is, that as I learned programming python, I learn about
what is a dynamic language and a dynamic software. I so gathered an exeperience
which I could easy reuse in any other language
- And to conclude, you can have a look into the book of Eric S. Raymond, the art
of unix programming, free on line at http://www.faqs.org/docs/artu/.
It is a very good overview of unix and opensource world.
And the advice he gived about Python is quite objective, in my opinion.
http://www.faqs.org/docs/artu/ch14s04.html#python_language

So, if you wonder yourself if you should change,
I would advice you to go toward Python, wich
is more easier and efficient than other languages I
have long experience in. (the others langauges are: C, Pascal/Delphi, Perl and java)

The mailing list and usenet forum on Python are very efficients,
but if you have any other question, you can ask me directly.

Bored by the unefficency of java and c he used at business
