With perfect play black is supposed to kill all white stones on 5x5,
maybe that's what you're seeing. GNU Go has never been tuned for play
on 5x5 but when I test it it does seem to be playing reasonably.
Actually I think GNU Go 3.4 may even manage to get a living group as
white against current development versions which make at least one
misplay as black.

I don't know but I guess it's at least not significantly worse than
any other alternative that is available.

If I remember correctly, by the way, the most interesting way to play
on 5x5 is to force black to start on 2-2.
