[computer-go] Why do computer-Go apps not label 'i' as the 9th row?

I apologize if this is a stupid question, but why is the convention to avoid labeling the 9^th row in a board display ‘I’.  Is this to avoid confusion with ‘L’?  Is there a problem with that character on Asian OSs?  It seems a little arbitrary to me and figured I would ask.
